How To: Install Applications and Themes via BlackBerry Desktop Manager

For the purposes of this tutorial, BlackBerry Desktop Manager will be known as “DM.” Now that you have the latest DM we can continue to the tutorial.

In order to be able to install applications and themes via BlackBerry Desktop Manager, you first need to have BlackBerry Desktop Manager

STEP 1

• Connect your BlackBerry to your computer via the USB cable that came with it, or any USB cable that fits.
• Start the DM.

STEP 2

• You have a few choices to select from here.
• Click on Application Loader, as seen highlighted above.

STEP 3

• In this screen you have two options to select from.
• Select Add/Remove Applications.

STEP 4

• You should now see something like what you see above.
• From this screen, click browse.

STEP 5

• Once you click browse you will see a file search screen like the one above.
• Go to and locate where you unzipped the application/theme files.
• Make sure you unzipped both the alx file and cod file in the same folder. If you don’t the installation will fail.
• After finding the alx file (for this tutorial it is ziplorer.alx) for the application, highlight it and click open.

STEP 6

• You will now return to the Application Loader screen.
• From here you should see Ziplorer now listed with Install under the Action column.
• Click next.

STEP 7

• You will now see what actions will be taken with your BlackBerry.
• In this screen, you should only see that you are adding Ziplorer.
• Click finish.

STEP 8

• You’re done!
• You can now exit the DM and disconnect your BlackBerry.

That’s it! I usually do a battery pull to allow my BlackBerry to start up fresh after application installations and the like, I suggest you do the same.

What is Autorun.inf (Tutorial)

Autorun.inf is the primary instruction file associated with the Autorun function. Autorun.inf itself is a simple text-based configuration file that tells the operating system which executable to start, which icon to use, and which additional menu commands to make available. In other words, autorun.inf tells Windows how to deal open the presentation and treat the contents of the CD.

The entire sequence is initiated when the "disk change notifcation" polling discovers a new disk in the CD or DVD ROM drive. Then, if the "Auto insert notification" feature is enabled (it is by default), Windows checks in the new disk's root directory for the existence of an "autorun.inf" file. If found, Windows then reads and follows the specific instructions this file defines. If no autorun.inf file is found, then Windows refers to the new disk by its serial number and executes the default actions associated with the (data or audio) content on the disk

The Autorun.inf file defines the following:
Autorun.inf Defines the following: The process or application that will automatically run when a disk is inserted
Automatically run when CD is inserted Optionally, one can define the process or application that will run for specific Operating environments.
Icon Representing CD or DVD The icon that will represent your application's CD or DVD when the drive is viewed with My Computer or Explorer.
Menu Commands when CD-ROM is clicked Menu commands displayed when the user right-clicks the CD-ROM icon from My Computer or Explorer

First go to Options>Preferences>Network

1. Under ‘Port used for incomming connections‘ enter any port number. It is best to use a port number above 10000. I use 45682.

2. Randomize port each time µtorrent starts: UNCHECKED
I leave this unchecked because I have a router. If you do not have a router or a firewall, and want extra security,check this option.

3. Enable UPnP port mapping (Windows Xp or later only): UNCHECKED
I leave this unchecked because I have experienced it slowing down speeds. It is not needed if you manually port forward.

4. Add µtorrent to Windows Firewall exceptions (Windows XP SP2 or later only): UNCHECKED (do this only if you have windows firewall disabled)

5. Global Maximum upload rate (kb/s): [0: unlimited]: 22 (for 256k connection)

6. Protocol Encryption: ENABLED
I would recommend everyone to enable this. This can help increase speeds with many ISPs.

7. Allow incoming Legacy Connections: CHECKED

Options>Preferences>Torrents

1. Global Maximum Number of Connections: 130 (for 256k connection)
This number should not be set too low or the number of connections made to your torrents will be limited. Setting it too high may cause too much bandwidth to be used and can cause slowdowns.

2. Maximum Number of connected peers per torrent: 70 (for 256k connection)
If you see that the peers connected to a specific torrent are exactly this number, or very close, increase this number to improve speeds.

3. Number of upload slots per torrent: 3 (for 256k connection)
This depends on how much you want to upload to other users. Do not set too low or it may affect download speeds.

4. Use additional upload slots if upload speed <90%: CHECKED

5. Maximum number of active torrents: 2 (for 256k connection)

6. Maximum number of active downloads: 1 (for 256k connection)
